Decision Maker: Cabinet Member for Resources
Decision status: Recommendations Approved
Is Key decision?: No
Is subject to call in?: No
The Cabinet Member approved the disposal of the former Youth Centre and Library at Thorney at an approximate value of £250k less agents’ fees of 1.25% + VAT and no higher than £499,999 (subject to outcome of the auction).
The Youth Centre is not used and is a surplus property. Given the challenge and expense of maintaining older properties the Council are looking to relocate the library (which adjoins the Youth Centre).
The alternative would be to let the Library stay in this building and see if an alternative use could be found for the former Youth Centre. However the Council’s Mid Term Financial Strategy advises that older buildings which are less efficient and more expensive to maintain are potentially an unwanted drain on resources. Disposing of the properties which are likely to be bought for residential development is therefore in alignment with this strategy.
