Petitioning Peterborough City Council to implement new strategies to reduce the number of discarded needles being found in public places.

We the undersigned petition the council to discuss and implement better, safer practices to reduce the amount of discarded used needles and other drug paraphernalia across the city. We want to find a solution which works for all, including those who are battling with addiction, in order to make Peterborough’s streets safer for everyone.

We are finding discarded used needles in many areas of the city on a daily basis. This puts many people at risk, including children who on many occasions have been the ones to find them. There needs to be action taken by the council to ensure that users have somewhere safe that they are willing to dispose of used needles while not being made to feel more vulnerable or intimidated by authorities. We understand that the needle exchange programme goes some way to combat these issues, but there is clearly more that needs to be done. It's only a matter of time before another child discovers and is injured by a used needle.
